Uni life is about to go into full swing tomorrow. Lectures start this week, and following a short introduction to various modules on Monday, actual teaching will begin for me in the morning.
Most of the infamous
C-Unit are now out at a Freshers party in one of the clubs in Hull. I and a few others are still here though so as to make sure we get up in time to travel onto the campus for an early start. Quite a few of us are also still tired from the dawn chorus this morning, when the fire officer thought it might be fun to have a fire drill at 6:40 am. Thankfully everyone dragged themselves out of bed and into the quad in enough time to not have to do the drill again some other time. We were warned on the first day that an early drill was on the way, and following a drill at a different hall the day before we were kind of expecting it this morning, but it still wasn’t exactly fun.
It’s good to have the internet in my room here in the halls, but there are still a few problems with it. I’m still unable to connect to the internet through various pieces of software. Mozilla Firefox and MSN Messenger however are working fine…the essentials.
Yesterday was the first meeting of the wind band here at the uni. We’ve only got two pieces to play at the moment, but one of them is a piece I’m really quite fond of. We’re playing the “Second Suite in F” by Gustav Holst which is a piece I’ve played for the last couple of years in DSSB (Doncaster Schools Symphonic Band), and although I’m sadly not able to play in that band any more, the memories will live on through playing this fantastic piece! Lots of fun indeed, especially the final movement.
Time now to catch up on some sleep I think, and also to try and take my mind away from this nasty cold I seem to be coming down with. It seems it’s doing the rounds at the moment so I hope it passes shortly. Either way, it’ll not keep me home for long. I’ll be back in Asylum (the club at the uni) for Tower tomorrow night. Bring on the party…
Hello and thanks for reading, this message is coming to you from my new home away from home at the University of Hull!
I finally arrived here on Saturday and got my internet access this morning when I officially registered as a student of the university.
It’s freshers week here and what a great week it has been so far. There are roughly 30 people in my block, which is block C of Grant Hall for anyone that cares.
Everyone seems really friendly and we’ve been going out as a massive group every night since we arrived on Saturday. Tonight is slightly different however, as I’m in the hall alone at the moment. Each student here has to officially register with the university at a specific time on a particular day. For most people, including everyone else in my hall, registration takes place tomorrow, however my registration time was 15:00 today. Registration is not a quick process, or more to the point, registration is a fairly quick process, but queing up to do so is not. It takes about an hour from starting to queue up to actually reaching the registration desk, then it takes a further hour and a half to queue up for the university ID card which is needed to access buildings such as the library and ICT suites. After this long experience I couldn’t drag myself out to the club with the others, so I’m here writing this message, and looking after the hall, making sure our neighbouring D block don’t try to continue any of their earlier pranks. Personally, I think they’re just jealous that we all get on so well…
I’m still in the process of finding out what I can and cannot access via the internet connection in my room. Firefox and Messenger are now working however, so that’s some of the important stuff done.
Things such as TortoiseSVN I’m having problems with, so I’ll have to look into that one more a bit later on.
More posts about life here at the university to follow in days to come…
